Lord Howe Island

When you arrive on Lord Howe Island you feel like you are in another world. The lack of people and sheer abundance of nature results in a highly unique experience.

This natural paradise has been well preserved to this day, with limited numbers of tourists (only 400 maximum are allowed at any one time). This means that the majority of the island has been left undisturbed.

What You Will See

  • Fish filled reefs
  • Pristine beaches
  • Unique native animals and plants
  • Nesting seabirds

Mount Lidgbird & Mount Gower
These two mountains are easily viewed on the southern end of Lord Howe. They are lava flow remnants from over 6 million years ago.

You can even climb the mountains if you like a bit of physical activity.

Mount Lidgbird (777 metres, 2,549 ft) is considered a difficult climb for experienced hikers. You will reach Goat House Cave about halfway up to the summit. If you’re lucky you’ll get a view of nesting Masked Boobies as well as the beautiful Red-tailed Tropicbirds.

The view to Mount Lidgbird and Mount Gower

Mount Gower (875 metres, 2,870 ft) is considered even harder to climb than Lidgbird and it may take you up to 10 hours to reach the top but it is well worth it. There is a rope assisted path to help you to the summit and you must do a guided walk, but when you get there you’ll be awe inspired by the spectacular views.

You’ll be climbing through highly unique habitats that aren’t even found anywhere else on the island, let alone in Australia.
There is the lovely flightless Lord Howe Woodhen which has been saved from extinction thanks to captive breeding. Also watch out for the Lord Howe endemic Kentia palm forests.

Ball's Pyramid
Ball’s Pyramid

From the top of Mount Gower you’ll also have a great view of the 600m Ball’s Pyramid volcano remnant, located 23km off the island.
